At the hospital all
images are viewed as uncompressed. However when you’re accessing PACS
remotely using compression helps speed up retrieval of images over
slower home DSL and Cable connections.
JPG COMPRESSION
The manner in which images are effectively stored reduces the use of
storage
space as well as reducing the traffic on the network.
The compression of the images to be stored can be performed in
three ways:
-
Compressed:
Using JPG compression, the user can decide
how much loss to introduce and make a trade-off between file
size and image quality.
-
Lossless
Compression: With lossless compression, every
single bit of data that was originally in the file remains after
the
file is uncompressed. All of the information is completely
restored.
-
Lossy
Compression: Lossy compression reduces a file by
permanently eliminating certain information, especially
redundant information. When the file is uncompressed, only a
part of the original information is still there (although the
user
may not notice the difference).
